Formerly the site of the British nuclear program in the 1950s and 1960s, this far-western region of outback South Australia has only recently been opened up to tourists. Take a guided tour onto the Maralinga Tjarutja lands and learn of Maralinga’s atomic history. Explore the remains of a 3000 military personnel village, the old airport – home to one of the largest airstrips in the Southern Hemisphere and ground zero where seven nuclear weapon tests were carried out. Touring is by a pre-arranged entry permit.
